Halloween is one of those holidays where you get to be a kid no matter how old you are. It's the one day of the year where you can dress as stupid as you want and not have to worry about your neighbors looking at you like you came from Mars. So what do you do when it comes time to picking out a costume? After all, you want to stand out from the crowd. You don't want to be just another pretty or not so pretty face. Well, there are several ways you can go with picking out a costume.

One direction is to go with the standard tried and true costumes. Things like ghosts, witches, Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula and things like that. But in order to make your standard costume stand out from everybody else there is a little trick you can do that will really get attention. It's very simple and yet few people think of it. So you can thank the author of this article later for this suggestion.

Find a twist. Make it as crazy and as insane as you want. It doesn't matter. The more wild, the better. For example. On top of your ghost costume, wear a bolder hat. Maybe put a necktie around your neck. Glasses are also a great twist. The nearsighted ghost. That will really get a laugh. Maybe wear hip boots over the bottom of your sheet. You might even try painting a bulls-eye on the front of your sheet. And here's a great idea. Remember the ghost busters emblem from the movie? You can put one of those on the front of your sheet with a line going through it. Kind of like a no ghost busters zone. All of a sudden, with any one of these ideas, your standard, dull ghost costume is the hit of the party.

For those of you who want to go for the celeb costumes, there are plenty these days to choose from. The one thing you don't want to do is to choose a celebrity who is currently the hottest thing on the planet. Why? Simple. Everybody and their grandmother is going to be wearing that costume. No, you want to go with celebs that are still popular but not quite the hottest thing going. That way, when people see you in your costume they'll be able to recognize you and yet not be saying to themselves, "great, another Jessica Simpson".

Finally, the last option you've got is to be totally original. Do you remember the episode of The Honeymooners where Ralph made his man from space costume? He took a bunch of things from around the house and put them together to make a very original costume. You don't have to be quite that creative but you get the idea. Use your imagination. Remember, this is Halloween, so there is no such thing as right or wrong, just dull.

Arts and Craft: Halloween Mask.

What you need: Popsicle stick, white paper plate or stiff construction paper, yarn, glue, scissors, crayons or markers. (If using paper plate that curves in corners: Make face on front of plate and glue popsicle stick to back. If you would rather use elastic then put face on back of plate.)

Either use a paper plate or if using construction paper make a circle as big as your child's head then cut circle out. This is the mask. Cut eye holes out of the mask. You can also cut out a nose hole and mouth hole. For the mouth hole you can show emotion by cutting the hole into a smile, a frown, an angry look, etc. Or you can just draw the mouth on. For a scary Halloween look, draw big pointy teeth on the mouth with a scar nearby. Draw mean bushy eyebrows or make eyebrows out of yarn. For the nose you can make a long beak out of construction paper. Glue green and orange yarn on top of the mask for hair.

If your child wants to look like a cat, draw whiskers around the nose and make pointy ears out of construction paper and glue them on top of the mask. Draw pretty long eyelashes around the eyeholes. Use your imagination. When you are done, glue the popsicle stick to the bottom of the mask, making it a handle to hold up the mask in front of the face.

Alternative: For children over five-years-old. Instead of holding the mask up with a popsicle stick you can also keep mask in place with an elastic band. But YOU MUST MAKE A BIG NOSE HOLE AND MOUTH HOLE IN MASK so your child is sure to be able to breathe. Just having eyeholes will not allow your child to breathe. If you decide to use elastic you might want to use a paper plate that is not incredibly stiff. You can staple the elastic on the sides. Have your child try the mask on to make sure the elastic is NOT too tight around their head. (NEVER use shoe lace, string or anything that can be tied too tight around their head! Your child must be able to take off mask quickly and easily. You do not want the mask to get stuck, covering their nose, as they are taking it off.) You can put masking tape over the staples. This could lessen the chance of faces scratches and also from the staples getting caught in your child's hair. If you are concerned about using staples you can make tiny holes on the sides of the mask to tie the elastic band in place. Note: It can get hot under a mask. Do NOT wear mask in extreme heat or near a fire/sparks. Keep mask out of reach when not in use.

Is it that life imitates art? Or that art imitates art? It seems that whichever is the case, licensed costumes for Halloween follow blockbuster movies.
