The Halloween Mask
Halloween should be a fun and enjoyable time, and for most children it is, and they enjoy the trick-or-treating, the games and the parties, but for me October 31st was a time of the year I did not look forward to.
Growing up on the farm, where the houses were far apart, trick-or-treating meant long drives between houses and getting in and out of the car, often on cold and wet nights. The costume I wore of a skeleton was a hand-me-down from one of my cousins and the skeleton mask smelt old and musty. Halloween was never my favourite holiday.
I did enjoy the community garage sale that the town (which was 20 minutes' drive) put on every year, on the Saturday before Halloween to raise money for whatever was most important and needed that year. I remember one year, the money raised went to a family with a son that had autism. It made me feel good to be part of it. I would always have the stand selling the lemonade because my mother made the best lemonade and I would always sell out before the day was finished.
I must admit I have warmed to the Halloween holiday now that I have children (a boy and a girl) of my own. I now live in the suburbs and my wife and I take the children trick-or-treating around our neighbourhood. Everybody decorates their homes and it becomes a real social event meeting your neighbours that you don't live next to and the children come home with a bag full of candy.
I've been pleased that my children have chosen costumes other than the usually witches and ghouls. My daughter wears a ballerina costume because she says she looks like a princess, and my son wears a policeman uniform - I think he will join the police force when he is old enough. Every year we ask them what they are going to wear and ever year it never changes, a ballerina and a policeman.
Every Halloween I watch my children having fun and enjoying themselves, and think back on the days of my Halloween times. Was it because I was an only child that I did not enjoy the trick-or-treating, a brother or sister would have made it more fun, but I still think it was that Halloween mask. The smell of the mask still remains with me to this day - funny how there are some things you never forget.

Why Do We Wear Halloween Costumes?
These days, both kids and adults delight in dressing up in all manner of costumes for Halloween; whether it's the latest pop culture icons or some classic character of literature, they can be fun. Yet, where did this all come from?
Originally, Halloween was a pagan celebration known as Samhain (pronounced Sow-in), and people believed that the spirits of the dead returned for that night. People used a two-fold method to protect themselves from being carried off. First, they left baskets of food at the edge of their villages as offerings, and second, they dressed up in elaborate costumes to hide from the dead. These were simple costumes of heavy cloth and a mask usually made to resemble a fierce animal.
When Samhain became the Eve of All Saints' Day - All Hallow's Eve - the Halloween costumes came in line with church doctrine: saints, nuns, monks and so on; although the occasional demon or ghost would creep in.
By the time the holiday came to America, in the latter part of the nineteenth century, it was seen as a time for adults to get together for a spirited party - with plenty of "spirits" - and no costumes. It wasn't until the Baby Boom that Halloween became a time of fun costumes as children dressed up in everything from pirates to policemen to spacemen outfits. Many clothing companies began manufacturing Halloween costumes and plastic masks but some of them were highly flammable. Over time, they were made safer and more elaborate.
