The next step would be to pick out clothes that match the appearance of the ears. You can also get huge suits that will make you look like a huge bunny or cat.

If you want to do something a little more original and crazy you should dress up as a celebrity. There are so many people you can dress up as and there are many different Halloween costumes you can put together yourself. You can either dress up as a celebrity you love, one you look like, or one you want to make fun of. It can be extremely exciting if you sit down and think through it all. Just make sure you know what you want, and go shopping for all of it on time so you can find everything you need. Making your own costumes is the best because you feel proud as you walk down the street asking for candy.

The Halloween Mask

Halloween should be a fun and enjoyable time, and for most children it is, and they enjoy the trick-or-treating, the games and the parties, but for me October 31st was a time of the year I did not look forward to.

Growing up on the farm, where the houses were far apart, trick-or-treating meant long drives between houses and getting in and out of the car, often on cold and wet nights. The costume I wore of a skeleton was a hand-me-down from one of my cousins and the skeleton mask smelt old and musty. Halloween was never my favourite holiday.

I did enjoy the community garage sale that the town (which was 20 minutes' drive) put on every year, on the Saturday before Halloween to raise money for whatever was most important and needed that year. I remember one year, the money raised went to a family with a son that had autism. It made me feel good to be part of it. I would always have the stand selling the lemonade because my mother made the best lemonade and I would always sell out before the day was finished.

I must admit I have warmed to the Halloween holiday now that I have children (a boy and a girl) of my own. I now live in the suburbs and my wife and I take the children trick-or-treating around our neighbourhood. Everybody decorates their homes and it becomes a real social event meeting your neighbours that you don't live next to and the children come home with a bag full of candy.

I've been pleased that my children have chosen costumes other than the usually witches and ghouls. My daughter wears a ballerina costume because she says she looks like a princess, and my son wears a policeman uniform - I think he will join the police force when he is old enough. Every year we ask them what they are going to wear and ever year it never changes, a ballerina and a policeman.

Every Halloween I watch my children having fun and enjoying themselves, and think back on the days of my Halloween times. Was it because I was an only child that I did not enjoy the trick-or-treating, a brother or sister would have made it more fun, but I still think it was that Halloween mask. The smell of the mask still remains with me to this day - funny how there are some things you never forget.
