What to Wear to a Masquerade Party

HalLoWeeN MasKs

A masquerade party is a chance to dress up in a beautiful costume and have a lot of fun. The planning of the costume can be as much fun as the party itself. There are so many different options for costumes that it will be hard to settle on just one. One of the most popular costume ideas is that of a character from the Renaissance. There are stores that offer King and Queen costumes from this time period.

There are also costumes for other members of the Royal Court. The costumes can range from something very simple such as jester, to something very elaborate the choice will be up to you. Some other costume ideas would be to dress as a fairy or an angel. There are also many costumes ideas available for the time period of the Civil War. Beautiful dresses like we saw in Gone With The Wind. Dashing uniforms and sabers. From the exotic to the outrageous A masquerade party is an opportunity to let your alter ego shine.

One of the most important things to think about will be your mask. These masks gained popularity in the 15 century when the Royals would give masquerade parties and they have been going strong ever since. there are many styles of masks to choose from. There are masks that will cover the entire face. Masks that cloak only some of the facial features that lend an air of mystery to the wearer. The mask can be very elaborate with scatterings of jewels and ones made of feathers. There are also just the simple black eye masks that are carried on a stick.

If you are on a tight budget one idea would be to buy a set of medical scrub uniforms along with a white coat a surgical mask and a stethoscope and go as a Doctor. Nursing uniforms would also be a good choice. You will want to start putting your costume together a week or more before the actual party. This will give you time to plan and time to make changes to the costume that you pick.

Basic Types of Masquerade Masks

HalLoWeeN MasKs

Generally, it seems that there are so many choices no matter what it is we have to make a decision about. There are so many options available to us that it can be harder and not easier unless we know exactly what we want and this is not often the case. When it comes to choosing a masquerade mask it is no different. There are so many shapes and colors and designs that it is easy to think that we may choose the wrong one. If you look on the bright side of things, no-one should know who you are anyway.

One way to make things easier is to divide up the options so that you have an easy step by step choosing system. First decide on whether or not you want a stick to hold it up or to have it tied around your head. Next decide on if you want a half, three-quarter or full face. Showing a little bit of your face may be a good idea because it can add to the mask, believe it or not. Unless you have an amazing full mask I would advise on something with a little bit less coverage.

Now you should decide on color. For men it seems that the less number of colors then the more masculine it will look. One solid color or a basic two tone can look really great depending on how the color is painted on and divided up. Some of you may like a lot of color and something a little bit more extravagant and then you can have feathers and other jewel-like things that will dress it up a bit and make it look amazing. This might be more to the girls liking however.

Whatever it is that you end up with make sure that you like it. It might be a good idea to find the perfect mask first and then choose what you will wear to the masquerade afterwards. That is because it is sometimes harder to choose a mask than it is a dress or a suit. If you already know what you are going to wear then it might be easier to choose the mask afterwards that will go very well with it. Either way the whole outfit should be a lovely awesome package. What is most important is that you enjoy yourself on the night and have a great time.

There are so many types of masquerade masks out there that you are sure to find one you like. You may prefer masquerade masks with sticks so you can take it off at any time.

Masks Make for the Best Costume, Masquerade, or Mardi Gras Party

Masks made from pale pastel plumage with shiny sequins are standard fare at Mardi gras, Carnival and masquerade parties. There's an allure and style to them possessed by no other costume element.

Much is made of our desire to pretend and the imagination's ability to do so. Few activities give us the opportunity as readily as does the costume party. Frills and flourishes that have no other place are found in abundance at parades of show costume-clad dancers wearing yards of sequined fishnet and feathered elegance.

None of it would have the same mystery without the elegance of the mask. These beautiful adornments have a history of their own that heralds back to court functions in pre-Revolutionary France. There's the hint of a palace in every feathery sequined one of them.

Party masks in plentiful supply are just a few keystrokes away. Feathers and frills that enhance the night's need for mystery and intrigue are available; so are sequined masks that hide Halloween ballerinas from crowds of ghouls and goblins from school.

Any costumed occasion can call for the appropriately feathered and sequined mask. Delicate colors can be matched to most costumes. Chiffon and silks of formal costume balls are the perfect place for feather masks.

The court jester may need to tell his best jokes to the feather masks in his court and juggle with his best skill. Refreshments will need to be more amazing than usual and the dances will need to be courtlier than ever before. Everything will take on a fancier appearance when masks with feathers and sequins appear at a party.

Laughter is an automatic response to the sight of masks made with the look of antique feathers and sequins in a costume's design. It is nearly impossible not to smile at this soft finery.

The Tradition of the Masquerade

HalLoWeeN MasKs

Masked balls have been a tradition in many cities around the world for centuries, but in no place do they have a richer tradition than in Italy, specifically Venice. The Venetian Carnival, marked by public masked balls where attendees arrived in spectacular costumes and masks, came into popularity in the 15th century. Since those days, the masquerade has spread throughout the world, and become popular especially during Mardi Gras, when Carnivals are held around the globe. Some of the cities best known for these celebrations include New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro.

Masquerade balls have a particular magic and mystery to them, because it is difficult to tell who is hiding behind the elaborate masks. This lends an excitement to these events that is still popular to this day. Hiding your identity behind a mask is a freeing experience, and it is no wonder that all kinds of behavior has been seen at masked balls that would not normally be sanctioned by society!

Although today's masked balls in general don't reach the standard of exquisite dress and fabulously decorated masks as they did in the past, they are still alive and well, especially during the Halloween season. Although Carnival celebrations traditionally take place in March as a precursor to the somber proceedings of Lent, Halloween is probably the more well-known day to dress up and don a mask nowadays.

While all kinds of costumes and masks can be seen at Halloween, traditional masquerade costumes have the appearance of the fashions that were popular when the masked ball was at its height. It's common to see fancy dresses with anything from a 15th to 18th century style - full gowns with petticoats, old fashion shoes and of course hats. But it's really the mask that makes the costume, after all it's a masked ball! In the heyday of Venice, the masks were a hot commodity and artists vied to create the most lovely, elaborate and beautiful.

Simple masks also abounded, and were part of the tradition. Today, both kinds of mask can still be purchased in Venice, but thanks to the internet you don't have to go that far to find a gorgeous masquerade costume. Whether you have been invited to a true Masquerade, or you are attending a Halloween costume and want something spectacular, a Masquerade costume is a great choice.

The elaborate accents and beautiful feathered masks of these costumes are not seen much these days - so you are sure to be the most looked at woman in the room if you choose such a costume for Halloween.

A Masquerade Party

Image : http://www.flickr.com

A masquerade is a fancy-dress party or dance, at which people wear Masks, in order to disguise themselves. Masquerade balls have been popular for hundreds of years, but especially in France and England about three hundred years ago. The Masks were actually used, for a type of game, "Guess Who I Am". The Mardi Gras, a celebration held each year in New Orleans on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins, is a religious festival. The people that celebrate this occasion, wear masquerade Masks and traditionally, remove them at midnight.

An ordinary mask, that you can usually buy, at a dollar store can easily be made into a masquerade mask. Just reinforce the part that holds the mask onto your face, using a Velcro strap or a sturdy ribbon. Decorate by using feathers, beads, ribbon, sequin, etc. Use a glue gun to attach, wherever you want.

Halloween Masks are perfect for this project, also. You can usually buy them, marked down, right after Halloween. Get several and paint or decorate them, however you would like. These make great gifts, especially at children's Birthday parties.

Construction paper is another way, to make a masquerade mask. Draw the desired design that you want your mask to be and cut it out, then have the children decorate with silk or satin fabrics in a variety of colors, netting, sparkle tulle, and/or other decorative fabrics, feathers, glitter, etc. You can make holes in each side, for the ribbon or Velcro. Glue a chopstick, just to the inside of the right eye.

The most popular masquerade masks, are the colorful, feathered ones. These masks can be made, by getting an ordinary, plain colored mask. The feathers can be bought from a craft store. Glue the feathers to the mask, overlapping, till you get the affect you are looking for.

Veronica Vrooman loves to wear masquerade masks. She also has a venetian masquerade mask that she picked up when she went to Italy, which she adores.

Venetian Masquerade Masks - History and Uses

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The use of Venetian masquerade Masks originated from Venice, Italy for their festival. This kind of mask was worn during the Carnival that was first documented use was shown as far back as the 13th century.

During the carnival in Venice, people used Masks to hide their true faces and be able to mingle with people of different social standings. This way their identity and social status are kept hidden. This is also true for today's masquerade parties where Venetian masquerade Masks are worn. Wearing of Venetian masks was more favoured by the upper classes during the past centuries.

Aside from hiding the identity of the wearers, men and women are able to experiment sexually without the fear of being recognized. Anyone who admires somebody is able to express his or her love or affection without having to show his or her face. People tend to say more and become more honest when they wear masks. They can do what they want more freely and inhibitions are released.

The modern Venetian masks, just like the Venetian masks worn back in 13th century are characterized by their complex designs. They are featured with bright colors accented with gold or silver. Most of the designs of the Venetians are adopted from Commedia dell'arte. These masks are of different shapes and they can also be full-face masks such as Bauta or eye masks such as Columbina.

Venetian masquerade masks can be made from several materials such as plasters, leather and paper mache. They are usually hand painted that have fabric trims, jewels and other materials to enhance them.

Aside from the examples of Venetian masquerade masks that were mentioned, other kinds of these masks are Volto or Larva, Moretta, Medico Della Peste or "The Plague Doctor" and others. The classical long nose style of masks is still a popular kind of Venetian masquerade masks that are worn at many events.

These kinds of masks have been used and are famous in the Hollywood. They were used in the film Eyes Wide Shut where Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are the lead actor and actress.

Venetian masquerade masks are still being worn by many people who attend masquerade balls to bring elegance and beauty to the ones who wear them.

How to Make Your Own Masquerade Party Masks

Surly you must realize that masquerade ball Masks weren't always purchased on the Internet! Think about it for a second. Back around three hundred years ago in Europe, they didn't even have electricity! So even if they had computers back then, there was no place on the wall to plug them in! What this meant is that a lot of people were left to make their own masquerade party Masks.

You Probably Have Everything You Need In Your Home

So where can you start and how will your final product turn out? The fact is that you don't need any special skills and it's something that your kids and all their friends will love doing. In fact you probably have everything that you need right in your home, once you begin searching around.

Mix Up Some Paper Mache' Batter In a Bowl

Your going to have to first whip up a bowl of paper mache paste and that's real easy. Simply throw about a cup of plain white four in a bowl and add water until it becomes a "thin runny" batter. Next add about a teaspoonful of salt to work as preservative and you're good to go. Remember to keep it in the refrigerator though, between uses.

Are You Ready To Make Your First Masquerade Party Masks?

Next your going to need a balloon that you're going to inflate and some newspapers that you're going to tear into strips about an inch wide. Now with just these things you can begin making your first masquerade ball Masks. Simply dip the strips of paper in the paper mache' batter and lay them on the balloon after you squeeze off the excess batter.

Use Regular Paints, Glue & Glitter To Finnish Them Off

Cover half the balloon and let the project dry. When you pop it off, you'll have a basic shape of a face. Next, cut out the mouth and eye holes, finish them up with some smaller dipped strips and after that's dry, it will be ready for painting. Drizzle some glue and add some glitter if you want then use thick rubber bands for the straps to hold the masquerade party ball masks to your head.
