Zanni Masks - Their Origins & Character

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Zanni family, of Masquerade Masks, originated in Venice in the fifteenth century with the Italian Comedy - The Commedia Dell' Arte. The word originates from the Venetian, Giovanni (John) and is a diminutive of it. Zanni is also sometimes known as Zan, Zane, Zanne, Zany, or Zani, and is where the English term 'zany' comes from. Meaning: a clown, an awkward simpleton, a buffoon or a person who is a, stupid incompetent fool.

The class of the Zanni family of Masquerade Masks depicts the buffoon, always from the lower class, the peasant, a migrant worker, holding positions of servants, valets, slaves, porters, odd-job person, hawkers, rogues etc. Zanni refers to the class of mask, as well as to an individual character. In The Commedia Dell' Arte, Zanni was an important character type, representing a social class.

The name and its class were inspired by the Bergamo peasants who finding that they were facing a famine and unable to sustain a living in the countryside due to heavy cheaper imports from Greece and other countries after the Venetians conquered their province in 1428, where forced off their farms to find work in the towns of northern Italy including Venice. Giovanni was a common name for the men of this area. They migrated into the towns offering themselves as servants, gofers, porters etc, selling what they could bring with them from the country. They were known for their nimbleness, agility, sturdiness, crudeness as well as their course and fantastic speech, which became heavily mimicked by the Zanni of The Commedia Dell' Arte. The family Zanni includes the characters of the Harlequin, Brighelle, Francatrippa, Pedrolino, Arlecchino among its class, as named individual characters; however Zanni are also any unnamed character in a play.

The Zanni Mask was first a full-face mask, which developed into a half mask, covering the nose eyes and forehead. The nose on a Zanni Mask is important, as the nose delineates how stupid or simple the character is. The longer the nose of the Zanni, the more dullard the individual is.

The Zanni, portraying country folk are primarily dressed in sacking, and have a stance of one used to carrying heavy burdens, so they are usually hunched, with knees in a bowed position and feet splayed, in stark contracts to their betters the gentry, who display deportment. The Zanni, are an animated people, constantly moving their arms and hands as they communicate, displaying a coarse rough voice and language. The Zanni's body often times has a mind of its own, with different body parts making odd and animated movements; the less stupid shorter nosed Zanni break out into acrobatics and handstands. Zanni is well known for farting, burping & snoring with gusto. Coming from a famine, Zanni displays a deep unforgotten hunger of the body, constantly hungry, constantly searching for food appearing gluttonous. Zanni are known for their laziness and perchance for sleeping, which they will do at inappropriate times and in any place, including whilst standing. The Zanni are ignorant, rouges, but can be loyal. They can be seen with a slapstick, which they are more than happy to beat someone with, parcels, baggage, food, or other items belonging to another, in their roles as gofers, porters, servants etc.

The Zanni Mask, is a mask of many characters, always from the peasant class, portraying, the ignorant, silly, loutish fellow, who has been built with agility and ease of movement. The Zanni Mask can portray a porter, soldier, baker, farmer, a market hawker, the Harlequin and more. There is diversity to the occupation of the Zanni. When you slip on a Zanni Masquerade Mask, who will you be?

Why the Joker Mask For Halloween Will Be the Top Costume Choice

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you set on going with a Joker Mask for Halloween? If so, you'll find that it is definitely a great costume to consider. With the popularity of The Dark Knight, many people are considering this type of a costume this Halloween.

While the movie was definitely popular and it really brought to life the characters within it, you'll find that the Joker just about stole the limelight from Batman in the movie despite being the bad guy. Here are a few tips that will help you to choose the perfect Joker Mask this year.

Tip 1 - Pick a Mask That Flatters Your Personality - When you are trying to pick out the right Joker Mask for Halloween, you'll want to pick out a mask that flatters your personality. If you happen to be more of a ladies man in an evil sort of way, then consider going with the mask from the Caesar Romero character, who was elegant and known as quite the ladies man.

Of course he later went on to be on the wanted list of Gotham City, but he still had charmed the ladies at one time. On the other hand, if you have a dark side and you're a bit twisted, then the latest Joker portrayed by Heath Ledger could be the perfect choice. It definitely portrays the aspect of horror and the twisted side of evil.

Tip 2 - Find a Mask with Hair - Another thing to remember when choosing your Joker mask is to try to find one that has hair with it. It can be difficult to replicate the joker hair on your own, and you probably won't want to have to purchase a wig too. So, look for the Masks that come with the hair attached to them so you get the entire look for one price.

Tip 3 - See if It Comes with a Costume - While the mask could stand alone as your get up added clothing will definitely help you complete the look. While it is relatively easy to come up with some great costume choices from eccentric pieces of clothing from your closet, if you can get the mask with the accompanying accessories you'll go a long way to becoming the center of attention at your Halloween party.

Tip 4 - Compare Prices - Before you decide to buy the Joker Mask for Halloween or the rest of the costume, you may want to compare prices first. There are many sites online that offer costumes and Masks but be sure to shop around. While it won't cost you and arm and a leg one of the major cost factors could be shipping and this is where you will want to pay attention to the prices being offered.

Types of Vegetarians

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Omnivores or those just starting out in this life style get confused about the different types of vegetarians. We are categorized and labeled by our food choices. Sometimes our choices are grouped under the title "veg*n" which is a shorter way to type "vegetarian and/or vegan". That seems to throw people off too. It's just a short cut, nothing censored. To help clear things up, I'll give you the run down from "light" to "hard core" types of vegetarians out there.

Flexitarian ~ This group are people that choose to eat vegetarian most of the time but still have no issues eating meat when options are limited. I find that most of this group do it for health or monetary reasons rather then ethical. Or they are easing their way into the vegetarian life style.

Pescetarians ~ A pescetarian eats fish and other sea food, but no other meat product. Again, usually motivated by health reasons rather then ethical. These also usually fit into the next group...

Lacto-Ovo vegetarians ~ Vegetarians that consume diary products (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc) and eggs. This is the most common vegetarian group and what most people consider when they encounter a vegetarian. On the same note there are just lacto vegetarians or ovo vegetarians. Usually ovo vegetarians are lactose intolerant.

There is debate on whether one can eat eggs and still be considered a true vegetarian. It really depends on how you think of it. Some consider eggs a diary type product, other's consider it meat. In a sense, when you eat an egg you are eating a chicken's ovulation.

Small science lesson: Like a human woman, a hen will ovulate. Unlike the human woman, that egg will not be absorbed by her body when not fertilized. An egg will be laid whether it's fertilized or not. So while the egg is technically a meat product, an unfertilized egg (like the ones in your grocery store) would not be capable of life even if they were left alone. It is a mass of useless tissue. It's that reason that many vegetarians will still eat eggs.

Vegan ~ Vegans will not consume any animal product, whether is it a part of the animal itself or something it produced. No meat, diary, eggs, honey. If it came from an animal or it is made with something that came from an animal. it is a no go.

There are also vegans that take it further and refuse to own, use or wear animal products, like leather, fur, snake skin or feathers and as well as anything that uses animal products, for example milk or honey in facial Masks and other beauty products. Some even refuse to spend money where animals are used as entertainment, like zoos and the circus.

Raw vegans ~ The hard core group. They are similar to plain vegans but their diet consists of unprocessed vegan foods that have not been heated above 115º F (46º C). They believe that foods cooked above this temperature have lost a significant amount of their nutritional value and are harmful to the body.

What Every Mummy And Daddy Should Know To Keep Their Kids Safe During Halloween

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With Halloween fast approaching, Executive Defense Technology is doing a lot of radio and TV interviews on Halloween safety for your kids. An area that they are being quizzed on is safety tips for teenagers that head out for a night of fun.

Remember, Halloween is for teens, too. It is an incredibly exciting time for them because this is the age where kids want to venture out for Trick-or-Treat fun without their parents. They are at an age where being on their own is not only cool but a necessary part of their development as they make their way into adulthood. The good news for you is that you can let them go with a few common sense safety tips:

1. Teenagers should head out in a group of least four individuals or more. Heading out alone is not an option! Make sure your teenager is with a group of good friends. Make sure that they know everyone well. Halloween is not a good time to be running around costumed in the dark with strangers or new friends they are not very familiar with.

2. Make sure you know exactly where your teenager will be when they are out. Ask them what their plans for the night are and hold them to it. Knowing where your teenager is on Halloween, is not about not trusting them, it is about safety. It is about you, the parent being able to find them in an emergency. Send your child out with a cell phone and have then check in periodically, every 45 minutes/ hour - whatever the two of you agree upon, just to let you know where they are and that they are okay.

3. Teenagers also need to keep their eyes open for the smaller, younger kids. This is one of the nights of the year where all age groups mix together. Teens, even with the excitement of being out on their own should keep their eyes open for the younger kids in case there is someone who needs help or just to simply keep from running into them or tripping over them. Smaller kids are more easily injured when running into larger kids simply because they are smaller.

4. Set a specific time with your child that they need to be home. This year, Halloween falls on a weekday. This means kids have school the next day. Have them home no later than 10 p.m. It will take another hour or so for them to calm down and relax before they can head to bed. Yes, tomorrow, they'll be tired but the day after is also a part of Halloween memories.

What about those younger ghosts and goblins? How can we keep them safe? Actually, one of the biggest threats that parents sometimes overlook on this fun day isn't going to come from a poisoned piece of candy or a predator lurking in the bushes. Although, we don't want to minimize those risks either. The biggest danger on Halloween for kids is - injuries from tripping and falling. The majority of injured children showing up in the Emergency Room will do so with broken arms or wrists, chipped teeth and cuts and bruises from falling or tripping in the dark due to excitement and obstructed vision from Masks.

As parents, we are enjoying ourselves visiting with neighbors and talking as we travel "around the block" from house to house. While you do so, here are some tips for keeping your kids safe so everyone can have a fun, memorable, safe evening:

1. Arm you kids with flashlights so they can negotiate their way down dark paths. A small, bright light that fits nicely in their hands is best. Make sure any flashlight has fresh batteries and illuminates well. Carry one yourself.

2. Remind the kids, before leaving the house about street safety. In their excitement, don't let them rush out in front of a car. Larry Elliott, of Executive Defense Technology, also recommends placing reflective tape on your child's shoes and on their costumes.

3. Make sure your child's shoes fit and are tied properly. Keep costumes above the ground by a few inches so your youngster doesn't trip on it while walking and running.

And since we don't want to forget about "Personal Safety", make sure your children (young and older) follow these suggestions so they don't become "easy targets" for predators:

1. Stay in well lit areas and avoid dark, lonely locations / paths.

2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If someone makes you uncomfortable, cross the street, head the other direction and go to a house of a family that you know and trust. (Review "Safe Houses" with your kids BEFORE Halloween so they know exactly where they can go for help)

3. Never give your name or details about yourself to a stranger.

4. Only visit the houses of the neighbors that you know and are familiar with - don't drop your children off in areas you are unfamiliar with.

5. Let the adults be the one to answer the door to Trick-or-Treaters. Don't let the children answer by themselves.

6. Never get close to or into a strangers car or go with them ANYWHERE. If a car pulls up, advise your children to take a few steps back. They should never get close enough so they can be grabbed unexpectedly. If someone needs help or directions, they should be asking an adult - not a child!

7. If you are approached, use your voice! FBI statistics say that 70-80% of assaults can be stopped by good verbal boundaries alone.

Staying safe is a choice! We still have a few days before the Halloween holiday - practice and rehearse safety with your kids so they know what is expected of them and how to prevent accidents or assaults BEFORE they happen.

Have a safe, fun Halloween!

The Tradition of Mardi Gras Throws Dates Way Back and Will Surprise You

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you ask the question, "When did the tradition of throws actually begin?", you are bound to get a different answer from each person asked. Some say that the tradition of tossing baubles to the crowd dates back to the nineteenth century, when a rider whose custom was that of Santa Claus had the idea to pass out trinkets just as his character could be expected to do. Others say it began in the 1920's. These same people will tell you that the first throw was actually flour that would be tossed by the handful onto the unsuspecting crowd of parade watchers.

No matter the origins of this tradition, today it is part and parcel of the Mardi Gras experience. Every year millions of colorful beads in just about every conceivable arrangement rain down on the expectant crowds gathered to watch and participate in the Mardi Gras parades. Probably the most notable and well-recognized throws today are these beaded necklaces, however there is a wide range of what is considered a prize throw. Most Krewes today, toss doubloons and cups as well. These are imprinted with the name of the Krewe, that year's theme and the date. Outrageous things are sometimes done in the name of catching prize throws. The theory is that the more pleasing the display is to the float riders, the more likely they will be to toss one of the better throws. Because some societies are all male or all female, one has only to use the imagination to figure out what some women may bare to get the attention of the riders in an all male society. A caveat is needed here, as this is baring of normally clothed body parts can and has landed many a young female in the slammer. That being said, many people use other creative methods to get the attention of riders on the floats. Some dress in costumes, that of a priest being a favorite in New Orleans. Others devise ingenuous contraptions in order to snare the most throws. These usually take the form of various types of netting which are then raised into the air in order to gather in as many throws as possible.

Because some members of these parading societies tend to ingest a copious quantity of alcohol before and during the parade, it can be noted that the more inebriated a rider becomes, the greater the amount of throws he will sling out to the crowd at any given moment.

Confetti used to be a popular throw but was banned early in the twentieth century because it had a tendency to get lodged in the eyes of the parade watchers. Today, many things are used as throws. These range from Frisbee's to stuffed animals. Male riders many times buy long stemmed silk roses and hand them over to the beautiful damsels in the crowd. Because riders are masked, women particularly enjoy receiving the roses, as they find this a highly romantic gesture, heightened by the hidden identity of the rider.
